The Genealogy of the house of lusignan
the House of Lusignan
The House of Lusignan was a royal house of French origin, which at various times ruled several principalities in Europe and the Levant, including the kingdoms of Jerusalem, Cyprus, and Armenia, from the twelth through the fifteenth centuries during the Middle Ages. It also had great influence in England and France. The family originated in Poitou, near Lusignan in western France, in the early tenth century. By the end of the 11th century, the family had risen to become the most prominent petty lords in the region from their castle at Lusignan. The caslte was constructed in the region of Poitou, occupying a natural strongpoint, a narrow promontory that overlooked steep valleys on either side. It was already so impressive in the twelfth century that a legend developed to the effect that its founder had faery aid, in the guise of the water spirit Melusine, who built it and its church through her arts, as a gift for her husband Raymondin. A similar legend of Melusine was adopted by the House of Luxembourg, which included John, Duke of Berry, who requested that Jean d’Arras write the Roman de Mélusine or the Chronique de Melusine part of Le Noble Hystoire de Lusignan.
In the late twelth century, through marriages and inheritance, a cadet branch of the family came to control the kingdoms of Jerusalem and Cyprus. In the early thirteenth century, the main branch succeeded in the Counties of La Marche and Angoulême. As Crusader kings in the Latin East, they soon had connections with the Hethumid rulers of the Kingdom of Cilicia, which they inherited through marriage in the mid-fourteenth century. The Armenian branch fled to France, and eventually Russia, after the Mamluk conquest of their kingdom. The claim was taken by the Cypriot branch, until their line failed. This kingdom was annexed by the Republic of Venice in the late fifteenth century. The kingdom of Cyprus and Jerusalem was afterwards claimed by the House of Savoy.
